Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi has invited foreign investors to invest in power projects in Pakistan, clarifying that tariff rules were being amended to remove their apprehensions. Addressing the inaugural session of Pakistan's first ever roadshow for power sector in Dubai on Monday, Jatoi said the government was introducing a culture of competitive bidding as it believes in market forces and deregulation.

"We have improved our policy to make it more investors-friendly through reduction in processing time for investment proposals by 60 to 70 percent," Jatoi said, adding procedures have been simplified and one-window role of PPIB has been further enhanced, he added.

Pakistan's security package for power sector was time-tested and has proven to be adequate and robust. Presently 14 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) with about 6,000mw power generation capacity were operating in Pakistan having healthy working relationship.

"We are floating three projects with total capacity of 1300mw for international competitive bidding (ICB) in next few months namely 500mw Uch gas fired project, 450mw gas fired project at Faisalabad and 350mw gas fired project at Lahore.

The minister also briefed participant about the economic situation, growth rates, foreign exchange reserves, investment packages and restructuring of Wapda.

He also paid rich tributes to late President Sheikh Zaid bin Sultan Al Nahayan who brought an economic revolution in the UAE and always supported Pakistan. There could be no other place better than Dubai to launch first ever roadshow in power sector.

UAE education minister Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al Nahayan, who was the chief guest, stated that Pakistan is my country and he wanted Pakistan to be better than UAE as it has much more potential.

He said large presence of investors shows that Pakistan will get positive response from investors.

More than 20 European and UAE-based companies in power sector and large number of investors from UAE participated and greatly admired the roadshow and expressed their desire that more such shows be conducted.
